JBLM Public Works Operations and Maintenance Division duty assignment can either be on JBLM McChord or JBLM Lewis.

Position requires a valid state driver's license. Must comply with Drug Abuse Testing Program Requirements. Position requires pre-employment and annual physicals. Position may require you to work nights and weekends. Operates, repairs and maintains oil and gas fired high-pressure steam and high temperature water boiler plants and all auxiliary equipment. Boilers include several brands of combustion/pollution emission control devices. Periodically makes rounds of plant to visually check for equipment operating problems; constantly monitors meters/gauges and maintains required records. Inspects, observes, troubleshoots, removes, checks for wear, cleans, replaces, repairs, adjusts, tests and maintains complicated boiler plant systems and equipment to critical/rigid specifications and tolerances. Makes adjustments to operating systems, equipment and controls; determines need for shutting down or firing up additional boilers; and adjusts firing controls, fuel feeds and air drafts for best combustion efficiency. Performs routine scheduled preventive maintenance. Removes burner, burner nozzle, strainer and orifice assemblies; dismantles and locates defects; reassembles and reinstalls components. Cleans refractory to include fireside, watersides, fire rings and boiler floors. Installs/maintains/repairs complex system of valves, piping and fittings associated with power and heating boiler operations. Performs emergency major repairs on an irregular basis and maintains service records on all equipment. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Screen Out Element: Ability to Do the Work of the Position without More Than Normal Supervision: Operate oil or gas fired high-pressure steam or high temperature hot water boiler plants under the direct supervision of a Class I Chief Operating Engineer or a Class II Operating Engineer; operate controls and maintain equipment in facilities with single boilers, and in multi-boiler plants to produce hot water or steam limited to operation of plants not exceeding an aggregate of 50MBTU/HR.
AND
Possess and maintain a Class III Operating Engineer Certificate or equivalent. The certified operator shall be limited to operation of boiler plants not exceeding an aggregate of 50MBTU/HR.Failure to meet the screen out element will result in an ineligible rating.

PHYSICAL EFFORT
Frequently works in confined areas in and around boilers and support equipment; e.g. auxiliary and pollution control equipment. Work requires moderate to strenuous physical effort and long periods of walking, kneeling, standing, climbing, bending, and crouching. Frequently lifts and carries boiler parts, equipment, and chemical supplies weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted and occasionally items weighing over 50 pounds with assistance of other workers or weight handling equipment.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Employee normally works indoors on concrete surfaces. Occasionally works outside for short periods. When working outside is subject to prevailing weather conditions. Works on catwalks and ladders. Employee is subject to high temperature, high noise, rotating machinery, soot, dirt, dust, grease, chemicals, oil, fuel, and fumes in the work area. Exposed to toxic effects of refrigerants, scalding hot water, and steam temperatures up to 365 F. Subject to cuts and abrasions from use of tools and equipment and burns from acids, caustics, and contact with pipes and boilers. Must be able to work using/wearing applicable PPE (hearing, eye, fall, respiratory protection, safety shoes, hard hat, gloves, etc. when required).

The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
